OUR VISION

To build an inclusive, barrier-free sporting community where wheelchair basketball thrives locally and internationally

MWBA is Malta's home for wheelchair basketball—focused on athlete development, inclusive participation, and building a strong community on and off the court. Through structured training, events, and outreach, we work to grow the sport and create more opportunities for people of all abilities.

Founded & Recognition

  • Established around 2013–2014, the MWBA began after noticing limited opportunities in team wheelchair sports on the island.
  • MWBA became the 35th full member of the International Wheelchair Basketball Federation (IWBF) in 2021, earning official recognition for international play.

Mission & Structure

The organisation is committed to empower individuals to reach their full potential on and off the court, by providing everyone with the equal opportunity to play, learn and contribute to this all-ability sport.

The Aim:

  • Overcome barriers for people with physical impairments to participate in sport.
  • Increase participation of all-abilities in sport; inclusion for everyone.
  • Creating awareness of accessibility for wheelchair users.
  • Create a competitive sport environment where all abilities are on an equal level.

MWBA is registered with the Voluntary Sector with VO number 1948.

The organisation is based in Marsaxlokk, Hillside, Triq Cadeo.

Domestic & International Activity

  • Locally, the MWBA runs training sessions, open days, and trials.
  • Actively supports inclusive programs in Maltese schools alongside the Paralympic and Olympic Committees.
  • Internationally, the MWBA national team made its debut in IWBF EuroCup qualifiers in Lille, France (April 21–24), supported by intensive training and strategic preparations.

Leadership & Collaboration

  • Led by President Noel Aquilina, recognised as a volunteer and active advocate.
  • Enjoys strong support from the Malta Basketball Association, Maltese Olympic and Paralympic Committees, SportMalta, and Maltese Olympic initiatives.

Vision & Values

  • Focused on cultivating a sense of family among athletes under coach Isaac Xuereb's guidance.
  • Emphasising teamwork, breaking barriers, and societal inclusivity beyond sports.

In summary, the MWBA is a dynamic and evolving organisation committed to expanding wheelchair basketball in Malta—from grassroots, school initiatives and domestic training to making a mark internationally—all while championing inclusion, empowerment, and community engagement.
